Chapter Twenty-Three

When he woke, Tommy found himself lying in what looked to be a hospital bed. He tried to rise but his vision spun and blurred so badly that he once again gave up and collapsed back down onto the bed. He also found that he couldn’t move his arms, and after some experimentation with them, he realized it was because each arm was handcuffed to the bed railing beside it.

“Hello?” he called, thrashing around as much as he could. “Hello? Help! What’s going on?!” He didn’t feel well at all, and with his growing confusion was a steadily increasing feeling of malaise.

The bed felt like it was spinning and rocking back and forth, as if it would dump him to the ground at any moment. Just when he was about to scream that he could take it no more, he felt nausea creeping up from his stomach. Managing to raise one of his shoulders enough to turn his head, he threw up violently and repeatedly all over the side of the bed.

When his stomach was empty, he felt somewhat better – at least, enough that he was comfortable laying his head back down on the thin mattress of the bed and closing his eyes.

“I feel awful, I’ll just rest for a few,” he thought. He knew that he was probably getting some of what he’d sicked up in his hair, but he couldn’t muster the energy to care. All he could think was that he just needed to rest his eyes, and he’d deal with anything else later.

He didn’t know how much later it was when the lights in the room came on very brightly. They were so bright it felt like they were stabbing into his brain.

“Did you have to throw up?” the same physician asked him. “Now I gotta get some guys in here to clean this up.” Then, tilting his head, he added, “and from the look of it, we’ll need to get you cleaned up as well. Alright, the others are at church getting their weekly dose of preaching. There’s a guard outside that will take you to the showers. You should have them all to yourself. Make sure you eat a decent lunch and you’ll feel better.”

Something the man said nagged at Tommy, but it took him a moment to realize what it was.

“Church?” he asked. “It’s Sunday?”

“Yeah, I checked in on you a few times but you were asleep, so I let you sleep. You needed some good healing sleep.”

“You checked on me but you just now realized I threw up? Right.” Tommy thought to himself. “I could have been laying here dead and you wouldn’t have noticed.”

Aloud, he said, “You drugged me.”

The physician shrugged. “Sure did. Best thing to do for you, you were pretty messed up. A couple days of sleep will have taken off the worst of it, and I’ve convinced the warden to lay off the drugs on you for awhile. Your body needs the break.”

“I can’t really remember what happened,” he replied.
